Spiky Moss – Taxiphyllum sp. ‘Spiky’

Spiky Moss is a beautiful, easy-to-grow aquatic moss known for its deep green color and distinctive pointed, heavily branched growth. Often described as the larger, bolder cousin of Christmas Moss, its longer fronds grow outward and upward to create a thick, textured appearance. It looks especially impressive attached to driftwood, rocks, vertical hardscape, or mesh, where it can develop into dense moss-covered branches and bushes. It can also be planted in small tufts across the substrate to create a unique moss carpet.

Care Level: Easy
Lighting: Low to Medium
CO₂: Not required
Growth Rate: Medium to Fast
Height: Approximately 1–4 inches (3–10+ cm)
Temperature: 68–82°F
Placement: Foreground, midground, rocks, driftwood, moss walls and other hardscape
Origin: Asia

Care:
Spiky Moss is very undemanding and is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced planted-tank keepers. It will grow under low lighting and does not require injected CO₂. Providing moderate lighting, regular nutrients and CO₂ can encourage faster, denser and more compact growth.

Attach a thin layer of moss to driftwood, stone or other hardscape using thread, fishing line or a small amount of aquarium-safe cyanoacrylate super glue gel. No nutrient-rich substrate is necessary because the moss takes nutrients directly from the water column.

Regular trimming will encourage thicker, bushier growth and helps prevent the inner portions of large clumps from becoming shaded or collecting excessive debris. Good water circulation around the moss will also help keep it clean and healthy.

Spiky Moss is particularly useful in shrimp tanks and planted aquariums because its dense branching structure creates excellent grazing and hiding areas for shrimp, fry and other small aquarium inhabitants.

Propagation:
Extremely easy. Simply trim or pull apart a healthy section and attach it to another piece of rock or driftwood. Each section will continue growing and eventually form a new colony.

Aquascaping Tip:
For the best display, attach Spiky Moss to vertical or angled pieces of driftwood. Its pointed branching growth becomes much more noticeable as it fills in, creating the appearance of miniature underwater evergreen branches.
