Goldfish are hardy, personable fish that require more space and filtration than most people expect. With proper care, they can live many years and grow quite large.
CARE BASICS
• Tank Size:
• Fancy goldfish: 30+ gallons for the first, +20 gallons per additional
• Single-tail (Comet, Common, Shubunkin): 75+ gallons or pond
• Temperature: 65–74°F
• pH: 7.0–8.0
• Water Type: Very clean, well-oxygenated water
FILTRATION
• Heavy filtration required (goldfish are messy)
• Strong biological filtration + regular water changes
DIET
• High-quality sinking goldfish pellets
• Supplement with vegetables (peas, spinach)
• Avoid overfeeding
TANK SETUP
• Bare bottom or smooth sand
• Sturdy plants only (goldfish will uproot/eat many plants)
• Plenty of swimming space
