📏 Size & Lifespan

  • Adult size: 2–4 inches (species dependent)
  • Lifespan: ~3–5 years with good care

🌡️ Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
  • pH: 6.8–7.8 (slightly alkaline preferred)
  • Hardness: Soft–moderate
  • Flow: Gentle
  • Tank level: They live at the surface, so calm water is key

⚠️ Tight lid required — halfbeaks are strong jumpers.

🏡 Tank Setup

  • Tank size: 20 gallons minimum (long tanks are better)
  • Best layout:
    • Floating plants (Salvinia, Frogbit, Water lettuce)
    • Open surface areas
    • Minimal surface agitation
  • Lighting: Moderate (too bright can stress them)

They feel safest when the surface is broken up with plant cover.
