Fissdens fontanus aka Pheonix moss on 3x3 stainless steel mat
Fissidens fontanus (often called “Phoenix Moss”) is a unique aquatic moss with fine, feathery fronds that grow in tidy, layered “fern-like” sprays. It attaches well to wood, rock, mesh, and hardscape, making it perfect for creating lush accents on branches, bonsai trees, or moss walls. Growth is usually slow to moderate, but it stays compact and looks very clean when maintained, adding a soft, natural texture without taking over the tank.
Care: Easy–Moderate. Low to medium light works, but medium light helps it stay fuller and more vibrant (too much light can encourage algae on the moss). CO₂ is not required, but it noticeably improves growth and density. Provide gentle to moderate flow so debris doesn’t settle into the fronds. Dose liquid ferts lightly if desired; stable parameters matter more than heavy fertilizing. Attach using super glue gel (aquarium-safe), thread, or mesh—don’t bury it in substrate. Trim by snipping the outer growth to keep the shape tight, and gently swish/rinse during water changes to remove trapped detritus. Best in cooler-to-mid tropical temps; it can melt or thin out if kept too warm for long periods.
