Anubias Nancon

Anubias Nancon is a fantastic hybrid that grows to a size that is spectacular but manageable and is a very adaptable, hardy species for the planted aquarium, terrarium, or paludarium!

Anubias Nancon (Anubias barteri "Nana" x Anubias afzelii "Congensis") is a nursery-grown Anubias hybrid developed by aquarist Bob Gasser. This type is distinguished by its comparatively long and pointed leaves, as well as its compact growth. It, like almost all Anubias plants, is exceptionally hardy, low-maintenance, and can flourish in a wide range of water conditions.

Anubias Nancon care is the same as for other Anubias plants. It works best in the midground or background and looks best in low to moderate lighting. Excessive illumination can cause unsightly and bothersome algae growth on its leaves. However, in an aquarium with a healthy population of shrimp (particularly Amano or Short Nose Shrimp), snails, and/or algae-eating fish that will regularly feed on the algae without damaging the Anubias plant itself, this algae growth can be readily controlled. Although some bio-fim/"wood-eating" Panaque genus plecos may "chew" holes in Anubias Nancon's leaves, most herbivorous animals will not harm it in any way. This plant, like many Anubias species, grows slowly and steadily and does not appear to respond appreciably to CO2 supplementation. It is most successful when tied to driftwood or rockwork. It can be planted in the substrate, but the rhizome (roots) should not be submerged otherwise it will decay and recede. It can also be grown in terrariums, paludariums, and viquariums submerged.
