Red pearl sword
🌱 Red Pearl Sword – Care & Growing Guide
The Red Pearl Sword is a decorative Amazon sword variety known for its rounded leaves and subtle red to pearly coloration. It’s a hardy, rooted aquarium plant that works well in both beginner and advanced planted tanks when given proper nutrients.
📌 Basic Information
- Plant type: Rooted freshwater plant
- Growth speed: Slow to moderate
- Placement: Midground to background
- Mature size: Typically 4–9 inches tall
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
This plant is often grown emersed by farms and will adapt to submerged growth after planting.
🌡️ Water Parameters
- Temperature: 72–83°F (22–28°C)
- pH range: 6.0–7.5
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
Stable conditions are important. Sudden changes may cause older leaves to melt while new submerged leaves develop.
💡 Lighting Requirements
- Preferred lighting: Moderate to moderately high
Under stronger lighting, the plant develops better shape and deeper coloration. Lower light will still support growth, but leaves may appear more green than red.
- Photoperiod: ~8–10 hours per day
- Avoid excessive light without nutrients, as this can invite algae
🌿 Substrate & Nutrition
Red Pearl Sword is a heavy root feeder.
Best results come from:
- Nutrient-rich planted substrates
- OR sand/gravel supplemented with root tabs
- CO₂: Not required, but improves growth speed and coloration if used
✂️ Planting & Maintenance
- Plant with the crown just above the substrate
- Do not bury the base of the leaves
- Remove older or damaged leaves as needed
- Space plants so leaves aren’t overcrowded
Once established, maintenance is minimal.
🌱 Propagation
Red Pearl Sword reproduces naturally by sending out runners or side shoots. When new plantlets form roots, they can be trimmed and replanted elsewhere in the tank.
