Description

Homalomena riparia is a rare, slow-growing aroid native to tropical Southeast Asia, often found along shaded riverbanks and forest streams. Its lush, heart-shaped leaves range from deep green to olive with a soft sheen, making it an elegant choice for both aquascapes and terrariums. It’s related to Anubias and Bucephalandra, sharing their hardiness and adaptability to submerged or emersed growth.

Aquarium Use

  • Placement: Midground to background; attach to rocks, driftwood, or use in substrate.
  • Lighting: Low to medium. Too much light may cause algae on leaves.
  • CO₂: Optional but promotes stronger growth and deeper coloration.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
    • pH: 6.0–7.5
    • GH: 3–10
    • KH: 2–6
  • Substrate: Fine gravel or aqua soil; rhizome should never be buried.
  • Fertilization: Benefit from liquid fertilizers and occasional root tabs if rooted.
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; excellent for stable, mature tanks.
  • Propagation: By dividing the rhizome.

Tips: Ideal for shaded tanks or under driftwood where delicate plants struggle. Great companion for Bucephalandra, Anubias, and Cryptocoryne species.

Terrarium / Paludarium Use

  • Environment: Prefers high humidity (70–100%) and good airflow.
  • Lighting: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight.
  • Substrate: Moist, well-draining mix — sphagnum moss, orchid bark, or coco fiber blend.
  • Watering: Keep substrate moist but never waterlogged; mist regularly.
  • Temperature: 70–85°F (21–29°C).
  • Growth Habit: Compact clumping form, making it ideal for tropical or riparian layouts.

*RED COLORING COMES FROM HIGH LIGHT. YOU WILL RECEIVE THEM WITH GREEN LEAVES BUT CAN ACHIEVE SAME COLORATIONS WITH APPROPRIATE LIGHTING.
